A dental implant is a small post that acts as the root of a tooth. The implant has a connecting device called an abutment that connects to the implant and then a crown is placed on top of the abutment. The implant acts as a replacement for a missing tooth. The implant serves to maximize your ability to eat, chew, speak, and smile with confidence.
What Is the Process of Dental Implants?
The first step of an implant if you haven’t already, is to get your tooth extracted. If bone grafting is required, it may be done at the time the tooth is extracted. After 2-4 months, when the bone graft has healed, the implant can be placed. It takes approximately 2-4 months for your implant to integrate and become stable. You will have a follow up appointment to check the progress of your healing. Since each person heals differently, your follow up appointment will determine if you are ready to move forward to the next step. After the implant has healed, a healing cap will be placed in order to guide the tissue healing process. After you’ve been released from the oral surgeon, we will place a custom abutment and crown.
What Are The Benefits of Implants?
- Implants stand independently so they do not damage any neighboring teeth by relying on them for support.
- Implants look gorgeous and feel natural because the post acts as the root of a tooth.
- Implants are sturdy and strong. With the proper dental care most implants can last a lifetime.
